7 Easy Ways To Use Turmeric
Up until a few years ago, most of us knew Turmeric as just one of the many exotic spices you'd find on the supermarket shelf in those iconic Schwarz jars. But recently it has had a huge boost in popularity, thanks to a lot more research being done about the benefits of natural ingredients. Turmeric (Curcumin) has proven itself to be one of the best spices we have available, and more and more studies are finding how true this is.
Some of the benefits include:
- Anti-inflammatory - Turmeric has been proven to be just as effective as some anti-inflammatory drugs on the market today
- Rich in anti-oxidants - helps against early aging and gives your skin a natural glow
- Elevates mood - the Phytonutrients in Turmeric have shown to be as effective for some people as taking Prozac tablets
- Boosts brain power - increases levels of the brain hormone responsible for dividing and multiplying neurons
- Aids immunity - tests have shown that Curcumin is able to bind to cells and reduce the entry of a virus to those cells, helping your immune system
And if all of that isn't enough it also tastes pretty good too!!
Here are some ways you can try incorporating more Turmeric in your diet -
1. Soups and casseroles
If you've never used Turmeric before it can take some time to get used to the taste. Using it in one-pot meals like soups and stews is a great way to disguise the flavour but still reap all of the benefits. Make sure to add black pepper to the dish also, as this increases the bioavailability of curcumin to allow the body to use it more effectively.
2. On toast or crackers
Mix fresh or ground turmeric powder with avocado, black pepper and salt and spread on sourdough toast or crackers for a yummy snack. Curcumin is fat-soluble so the healthy fats in avocado may help the body to absorb it easier, meaning you get more of the benefits.
3. Golden Milk
If you've never had golden milk you need to try it! A warming, soothing drink, perfect after a long walk or before bed. The immune-boosting properties of the Turmeric also make it the perfect tonic for when you get that niggling feeling that a cold could be taking hold.

4. Winter Tonic
Nutritious and delicious, perfect for a breakfast on the go or an after-school snack for the kids.
5. Roasted veg
A great way of getting more veggies into you (and your family) is by adding more flavour. This is easily done with some simple herbs and spices. Just add ground turmeric, cumin, coriander, salt, pepper and olive oil to a bowl with chopped veg, mix together and spread onto an oven tray to bake. Twenty minutes later you have brightly coloured, yummy smelling veg that will feed your body and mind.
6. Add to a smoothie
Another great way of disguising the taste is in a smoothie. You can buy organic ground turmeric in most health food shops or if you have fresh Turmeric root just grate it in. Don't forget to add freshly ground black pepper and some nuts or seeds to get the healthy fats in. Our teenage daughter has a smoothie in the car every morning and it's great knowing she's going into school with all the nutrition she needs for learning.
7. Face mask
This one requires a leap of faith because as you may know, Turmeric stains!! My fingers have been yellow for the past week after I picked up a fallen piece of grated turmeric without thinking!! But, after much searching and reading reviews, this does really seem to work, and doesn't leave you looking like an Oompa Loompa!! It works especially well for any skin inflammation, scarring or acne, but please do a patch test somewhere hidden first just to be safe!
P.S. If you do have any staining from handling Turmeric, use lemon juice or a natural skin toner to remove!
